My Story
When I was 11, my Mom got diagnosed with stage 2 grade 3 very aggressive breast cancer. Luckily we caught it early and it was treatable. It was November 2024 and my mom said that she had to take a word trip with her best friend down to Texas. At the time I didn't think anything of it because my mom went on work trips all of the time. So when she got back and she called for a family meeting. I thought it was going to be good news like we are going on a vacation or something like that. So when me and my two younger siblings all got together mom said this was a serious conversation and my body tensed up. because I didn't know what could be bad. So when my mom said "That wasn't a work trip I just got back from, it was a doctor appoint. And they found a lump inside of me." my mind went crazy as she kept speaking. "I have cancer." The words hit me harder than anything before. My brother was 6 at the time and didn't really know what cancer was so he left the room and went back to watching his dino TV show. Me and my sister both stayed and asked questions. My sister at the time was 8 and she knew was cancer was but thought it was all ways death. so she asked my mom "mom are you going to die?" and of course my mom said "No honey, I am just going to get sick for a while. and maybe lose some of my hair." and with that answer my sister went up and hugged my mom, then went out to watch TV with my brother. When it was my turn to speak I said "So mom is the cancer treatable, did you catch it early?" I already knew a little bit about cancer because two of my friend's mom caught Stage 3 and they still caught it pretty early but it had already spread to the Lymph Nodes. Luckily their mom survived. So when I heard my mom had cancer I asked a couple of questions and yes it was treatable, and yes we caught it early. So after that my mom said that she was going to need to have chemo and radiation and that she may lose all of her hair. So after I heard that she was going to have to go thought chemo just like my friend mom I shaved my head for their mom. And the next week I completely shaved my head. So fast forward it is about April and my mom went to Texas to get her surgery and first round of chemo started. So about 1 week after her surgery we all went down their to visit my mom and our grandma in the rental house. And then 1 week she came home an started chemo in Missouri where we live it was a long 3 months. After all of this she had to go back to Texas and do her radiation for 1 month. My mom said that radiation is like having really bad sunburns all the time. So right now in September 2025 my mom and almost ready to have the reconstructive surgery and that is happing in April 2026.
